Ausyfish was established in 1988. Stage one consisted of 28 ponds, 10m by 20m, and 2 quarter acre ponds. The water for these ponds was supplied by a 5 acre storage dam, seen in the bottom right of the aerial picture below. In 1992 an expansion program began that so far has increased the farm to 127 ponds and 3 storage dams. The hatchery building is approx. 30m by 15m. A hot house 5m by 20m, in winter, houses the more sensitive fish, such as New Guinea rainbows and in summer is the centre of intensive spawning of ornamental fish. Natural vegetation has been retained wherever possible.

The owner, Bruce Sambell (pictured right) has been involved in the fish business for over 30 years. He is the serving president of the  Aquaculture Association of Queensland Inc., as well as vice-president of  the Queensland Aquaculture Industry Federation Inc, and a member of Queensland's Freshwater Management Advisory Committee (FMAC). In 2006 he was awarded a life membership of the Aquaculture Association of Queensland, in recognition of his service to aquaculture. Before setting up his fish farm he operated a wholesale and retail aquarium business from Sydney.

JADE PERCH Click for more information.

The picture above shows a Jade Perch specimen with many spots. Some say the spots move around or change position or shape. We have not seen any evidence of this on our fish. However we have seen considerable variation on individual fish, from some individual fish having no spots to some with many, as with the specimen.

Australia's Golden Perch have been popular as a table fish for generations. Until recently licenses existed for the commercial harvest of golden perch from the Murray River. This practice has been discontinued, with the exception a few licences at the mouth of the Murray River. Almost all golden perch now come from aquaculture. Early in 2004 the first commercial quantities of Lake Eyre strain fingerlings were supplied to grow-out farms. There are three major strains of golden perch.  These strains have distinct qualities and perform differently under aquaculture conditions.

Hatchery Products

Ausyfish will provide larvae of Jade Perch, Silver Perch, Golden Perch and Sleepy Cod to customers almost anywhere in the world. Ausyfish have been offering this service to table fish growers for many years. For details click here.

Sleepy Cod

Another freshwater Australian native fish with enormous potential as a grow-out species is the Sleepy Cod.  Sleepy do not seem to be suitable for growing in open fishponds. This species is grown in  recirculating systems, and may be suitable for cage culture.

So far in Australia the five species to demonstrate their suitability as a recirculating system species are Murray Cod, Barramundi, Jade Perch, Golden Perch and Sleepy Cod. At  Ausyfish we believe we were the first hatchery to develop commercial techniques to produce Sleepy Cod fingerlings in commercial quantities. This fish is very similar to another species well known in some Asian countries for its superior eating qualities. That fish is known as the Marble Goby.

Prices for this fish can easily reach over $40 per Kg.    In Australia the Sleepy cod has sold for around $30 per Kg. Recent sales for Sleepy Cod were reported to be $17 per Kg for fish of 350Gms, and $25 per Kg for fish of 800Gms. The bigger fish are much preferred. The Sleepy Cod is said to have the best eating qualities of all our freshwater native fishes.
